Gill and Peter Hart moved here in 1977 and have been slowly creating a garden. Their daughter Louisa moved back a few years ago with her family; her husband Tony and children Jacob and Cameron, to become the next generation of gardeners.

Kirklands was built in 1832 but by 1977 the garden had suffered from many years of neglect. There were ponies in the walled garden, a few of the larger rhododendrons, many dead or dying elm trees and a retired miner spending half a day a week cutting the grass.

With a young family and a business to run, progress was slow but gradually a garden emerged and became an all-consuming passion for Gill and Peter.
